This Impulsive REVIEW looks at Captain Punishment, the innovative audio comic book and its “All Girls Spectacular” episode.
A female private eye types away at her report on continually misogynistic strife and ventures off into each of the increasingly crazy superhero adventures.
We got to see the antihero mister, I mean, Captain Punishment, himself, at their New York Comic Con booth last year and were blown away!
Captain Punishment is a unique listening experience and the art, via sound, has a wicked sense of humor.
The episode “All Girls Spectacular” kicks off with a word from their fictional sponsor, ‘The Pat Roberts Abstinence Kit,’ and then a further mention of menses, an upset jockey speaking up against making 50% more than the female character Betty Simone, because she is a woman in this phenomenally funny comic where women also strive for equal pay in today’s society and fail.
When one boy in school is transformed to a girl to experience how different the world treats them, the enchantress aptly says, “Our synced up cycles are about to start.”
The menses humor helps make the temporary gender reassignment entertaining and hilarious, and it is only the start of the superheroes conundrum in this episode.
The outrageous, and oft politically incorrect, adventures in this hour long audio comic surprise you with enough randomness to be one of the great early episodes of Family Guy.
The voices are pleasant on the ear, and could just as easily be working a DreamWorks movie, providing it is a much more adult (fun) version.
Realistic views on comic con, geeks, cosplay, and science fiction nerdism makes a strong showing in this show.
Podcasts from good radio-like disc jockeys are great, but for comic book fans, Captain Punishment trumps all!
We are talking about an audio comic book here, complete with quality productions and sound effects that offer a way for the blind, or the audiobook crowd, to enjoy a fully immersive comic book experience.
Captain Punishment and the entire cast have combined their creative voice acting and writing talents, not to mention love of all things comic books, to invent this audio comic book genre, and they are taking the podcasting community by storm.
The writing, the voice acting, and the production quality from Captain Punishment are top notch, fluid and entertaining.
If you have ever experienced a comic book convention you are in for an impactful twist when all the male superheroes disappear and panic ensues.
I mean they even have an alert for that scenario: “security went to Code Fuchsia”!
Tune in to Captain Punishment early and often on their site captainpunishment.com!
Impulsive REVIEW Grade: A+
"Impulsive REVIEW: Captain Punishment All Girls Spectacular" was written by R.J. Huneke
The day has arrived! Blackwood State by creator Ivan O'Neill, colorist Kara Zisa, and editor R.J. Huneke is being published by POWkabam and Pentian in 2015 and a crowdfunding campaign is now live and underway to gain the funds needed to attend comic conventions across the US!
The 3 issue mini-series will be in print and eBook! Be sure to head to the page on the Pentian crowdfunding web site to see all of the exclusive perks for backers of this great work.
There will be variant covers, there will be signed copies, coffee mugs, tee's, and handwritten letters from TA Gwen of Blackwood State University, and even a special comic designed superficially for the contributor. Using a seven word sentence and a picture, O'Neill will create a 1 page comic about the contributor (and end up being totally ridiculous with it)!
All backers also share in a portion of the books' royalties, so you can even make a few bucks on your investment into the next great Adult Swim-esque comic.
Do not miss out on all of the ridiculously funny storylines from a creator who is a huge fan of Rick and Morty and Family Guy!
Formats: 24-25 page comic books, eBooks
Run: Blackwood State 3 Issue Mini-series
First Issue Release Date: 2015 . . .
Pencils, Inks, Letters: Ivan O'Neill
Colors: Kara Zisa
Editor: R.J. Huneke
The first official publication of POWkabam will be a graphic novel by author/artist Ivan O'Neill titled Blackwood State, and published in conjunction with Pentian - an imprint of Lantia, LLC - here. It will be released in serialized form with three 24-25 page issues in the coming months of 2015.
For Blackwood State, O'Neill calls on a notorious state college and the life of a young lady struggling to live in a world that has no idea how not to crap on those that value the study of English writing. Alongside her fellow literary comrades, Guinevere Katz must attempt to keep her sanity and her grade as she survives one of the most obnoxious experiences of her academic career . . . and her professional career . . . and her life as a sentient being.
Calling on father Bill Shakespeare, as her god, and Falstaff as her inner muse and bartender, Gwen's deteriorative, drunken English career is a journey that seems perennially poised on the brink of disaster. Just how the hell does one make a living with a degree in English anyway?
The debut of Blackwood State hit the New York Comic Con October 9-12 2014 with a 4 page print preview issue # 0! And it sold out!
